Non-Poker Update
First of all thanks to everyone who commented on the last post. My plan right now is to try to get a job with this finance company with which I have some connections. Some specific replies from last post's comments:
- For everyone who suggested investing or trading, I'm going that route!
- My degree is in philosophy.
- I have played some NLH in the past six months. I find myself losing a lot of money with one pair. I'm sure I could learn to beat the game pretty quickly but it didn't seem like much fun to me. I liked PLO more.
- Pauly, I love your bar idea, especially if we call it Triple Draw, but I am not a bar guy. I don't drink and I don't like drunk people.
- I could certainly invest in a restaurant/bar/franchise but I am not excited by this idea and it's very time intensive, which is not something I'm looking for.
- A few people suggested I move down in limits, switch games, take an extended break, or otherwise stay in poker. I hate poker right now. I don't want to play at all. I have not been running bad over my bad streak, I have been playing bad. If I had to, I could turn it around and make a living playing poker. But I have no desire to do so right now. Poker will always be here for me to come back to if I change my mind.

I should have suggested this earlier but didn't catch your previous post until the comments thread was long already. If you have money that you're looking to invest in something that doesn't require an enourmous time committment, go with real estate. If you buy a duplex or small brownstone (depending on how much money you're comfortable investing), you can move into one unit and rent out the other vacancies to cover your mortgage costs. Obviously you would no longer be wasting money on rent, but building capital in your building. Also, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to paint or wallpaper a building to fix it up. The schedule requirements you would have as a landlord would fit perfectly with the poker lifestyle. And you would be able get out relatively easily. The risks associated with residential real estate are much clearer and easier to manage than the risks associated with opening a bar or other restaurant, which would require you to become a bona fide small business owner.

Yes, that's a good idea. Unfortunately I can't afford to buy the sort of place I want to live in in the city I want to live in, so I'm stuck renting for now.
if you need any help, let me know. ive got some top contacts in the industry and some pretty good ideas.
cool, sounds really interesting. i have some interest in that career field, so let us know how it progresses
Jeremy,
I can always use more help. Please email me: chrisfargisblog at yahoo.
Chris,
Good luck in your new career.
The one thing I do hope is that you continue to blog.
Since I can only imagine how hard it would be for me to try to make the transition back into the "straight" world--although my options, if I tried to find a decent job, would be far more limited--I think it would make good material for your blog.
As a casual reader of the blog I'm delighted to see you playing, and winning, at stars right now. Your blog is always a good read. GL in whatever it is you do next, poker or not.
Whatever you do, try to be a nicer person at it than you were at the poker table.
Best of luck in your future career.
He was nice to us non-douchebags, douchebag!
