Bahamas: Some Hands From Day One
I don't think I mentioned yet that I played some 200-400 triple draw last night and got stone cold buried. Luckily I'm going to win this tournament so that should get me almost even.
Here are some hands I remember from day one of the main event:
- Twice today I got it all-in with AK vs QQ and won. Both pots were over 20k. This more than anything is the reason I'm still in the tournament. You really do have to get lucky to do well in these things.
- 50/100 blinds, I open for 250 UTG+2 with AhQh, MP player calls, everyone else folds. Flop JhTh3c, I bet 350, he makes it 1000, I have about 8500 behind and he has me covered. This is an interesting spot for me, I think. I decided to jam and he folded.
- 100/200/25, I open for 650 in MP with QJo, LP calls, BB calls. Flop A72 with two hearts, BB checks, I bet 1200, cutoff folds, BB calls. Turn Th, check check. River is some complete blank like a black four, BB bets 4000. This bet didn't smell right to me for some reason. I didn't think he would check-call with a flush draw. I thought it was likely that he had a medium to large ace or even aces up. I decided he would have a hard time calling a raise with these hands. I made it 11000. Turns out he had 22. Oh well. I'm not sure how I feel about my play here but I almost never make big bluffs like this so I can't be doing it enough.
- 150/300/50, all fold to the cutoff who opens for 1100, SB folds, I make it 3500 with AA and have about 7500 behind, he jams with AQ. Wheeeee. I win.
- Same blinds, cutoff+1 opens for 1100, cutoff calls, I make it 3900 on the button with KK, opener folds, cutoff jams for like 6000 total. I've just beaten this guy a few hands before with AK vs QQ by making a flush on the river. He just wants to go home and everyone can see it. I call, he has 8d7d, the board comes 6x2x2dQd5d. I comment that the 5d was supposed to come on the turn to give the guy the proper sweat. He gives his entire stack away with AQ vs AK on a king high board about 10 minutes later. Just brutal.
- Same blinds, I open for 1050 from the cutoff with Qh6h, button calls, BB calls. Flop 862 with two clubs. BB checks, I bet 1500, button makes it 3500, BB jams for about 10k, I quietly fold wishing it had come 662 or Q62 or something where I could have shown down this hand, button thinks for a million years. This guy has been taking a million years to decide frequently and has had the clock called on him at least four times. Someone calls the clock this hand. He finally mucks KK faceup. While the guy was thinking, BB said something like, "I'll show you if you muck." BB shows JJ. Oops.
- 200/400/75, John Myung limps, another guy limps, I call the SB with A4o, BB checks. Flop A54 with two hearts, I bet 1500, BB calls, limpers fold. The BB is a bit of a calling station so I like my chances to get paid off with any ace he has here but he could also have a flush draw or something sneaky like the nuts. Turn 3, for some reason I check, he checks. River 7, for some reason I check, he checks. He has AT. I could have made some more money on this hand, but those were scary cards against a blind in an unraised pot.
- Same blinds, I open from the cutoff for 1400 with Kd8d, only BB calls. Flop 993, check check. I am planning to raise the turn no matter what comes. Turn K, he bets 2000. Well now I can't raise. I call. River A, he bets 2000. I hate my hand and call. He has A9s. Boy am I lucky that king came.
- Same blinds, very close to the end of the night. The tightest player at the table makes it 1200 UTG, all fold to me and I call with TT. Flop 762, check check. Turn T, I bet 2000, he sighs, shows AK, and folds. I thought he might have a big pair and just be planning to raise me on the turn in which case I would have gotten his whole stack. Oh well.
My table was pretty tough the whole day and when good players busted out, other good players got moved to our table. We started with The Grinder and Martin Feijo and saw John Myung, Lee Markholdt, and Jennifer Harman join us along the way. The unknown (to me) players were also solid. Hoping for a better draw tomorrow but I'm confident in the way I'm playing regardless.

If I were you, I would ignore poker for about a month, and drink heavily every night. That way, your bad beats will disappear, and everything will work out just fine.
