$2500 Day One Wrapup
I ended day one with 138k chips. There are 35 players remaining and blinds will be 3k-6k with a 1k ante. I think first place pays around $270k. Other notable names left in the field include Carlos Mortensen, John Gale, Andrew Black, and Surinder Sunar. Interesting day one hands:
- In the first three and a half hours, I get one pair of sixes, one pair of fives, and one AJo. Brutal. I am down to around 4k from the 10k starting chips.
- I move to a new table and this hand happens with 200/400 blinds and a 25 ante. UTG limps, LP makes it 1200, button calls, I call in BB with Jd8d, now UTG jams for 3500 more, raiser calls, button calls. The 3500 represents more than half of my remaining chips but I'm getting such a ridiculous price that I have to call. Flop 9d7h2d, I jam, preflop raiser calls, now button jams and preflop raiser folds. UTG has QQ, button has A9s, a T comes on the river and I instruct the dealer to pass the sugar.
- Don't remember specifics of this hand but I limped from the SB blind-on-bind with Jd7d, the BB raised and I called. Flop T98 with one diamond, I check, he bets, I call. Turn a blank diamond, I check, he sets me in, I call, he has 8d4d, drawing stone wallace dead. After the hand he says something inane like, "I thought you would respect my raise more than that."
- I raise UTG with AhQs, UTG+1 calls, UTG+2 calls, all others fold. Flop Qh3h2h, I bet 4000, UTG+1 folds, UTG+2 makes it 8000 and has about 17k behind. I jam and he folds. In hindsight I think jamming just has to be wrong here. A very smart player whose opinion I asked about this hand reccommended re-min-raising to 12k on the flop. Normally this would be out of the question but the more I think about it the more I like it. It's very hard for him to fold for 4k more and he's drawing to three outs at most.
- I raise UTG with AQo, MP player who had said a few minutes prior to this hand that he was "ready to double up or go home" jams. I do the math and decide I am priced in. While I am doing the math out loud, some genius at the table actually says in all seriousness, "You use math in this sort of situation?" Sigh. I call, he has KQo, I bust him.
- UTG limps, I raise on the button with 95s, SB jams for a raise that prices me in, limper folds, I call, SB has A8o, 8 on the flop, 9 on the turn, I bust him. Everyone at the table marvels at the "balls" that I have to call the reraise.
There were others but I have to get some sleep. I'll try to update tomorrow if we get breaks.

Good luck.
Good luck today!
Rooting for you.
In the AhQ hand, is the argument against just calling the min-raise is if a heart hits the turn, your action drys up?
Good luck the rest of the way. 'and I instruct the dealer to pass the sugar' is hilarious.
Best of luck.
Billy, I think calling is okay too. I've been thinking a lot about the hand and I can see good arguments for all three decisions (calling, making a small reraise, and jamming). It's an interesting problem.
You mean you actually use math in poker? Like, with numbers and stuff?
Too funny.
