Badugi
Playing a little badugi online tonight. Here's an interesting hand.
- Four-handed, UTG limps, I raise on the button with 765x, both blinds call, UTG calls. They all draw two, I draw one. I make a ten badugi on the first draw and bet after they check to me, they all call and draw two again. Here's where it gets weird. The blinds check and UTG bets out. He knows I'm pat so he's either trying to get me to break/fold a rough hand or he has a monster and he's trying to get me to raise so he can three-bet. Notice that if he does have a very strong hand, he should still check-raise because he gets extra bets out of the other players in the hand. Anyway I decide to raise, the blinds fold, and he three-bets. I call, we're both pat, he bets, I call, he has K42A badugi and I win.
Interesting. He can't beat any hand that I'd be calling him with, but if you asked him if he was bluffing he would say no. And it's a peculiar spot in which to bluff because he's drawing to the nuts if he just throws the king away!
I've noticed something interesting about this game which is that NOBODY BLUFFS. I've never seen a bluff other than one I've run. Maybe people are doing it and I'm only calling them down when they have a real hand. I haven't played very much of the game. But seriously, people seem to play their hands super-straightforward. If they're betting strong they have a hand. If they check, they don't. This is exploitable.
Wow, the same guy from the previous hand I mentioned just check-raise-bluffed me after the last draw! I almost mucked my decent hand because nobody bluffs but decided to pay it off.
Wow, I just lost with 6432 in badugi. Brutal.
As much as I like these non-hold em games, I think I'm going to start playing the Party games again this week as soon as I get money in my account. Did I mention this in my last post? I think I did. Limit hold em here we come.

Where do you play Badugi online?
Doyle's Room.
I'd be interested to know if your badugi opponents are more likely to also be playing triple draw or O8/Stud8.
Here's how I would react, watching this go down. Maybe he makes the rationalization that you drew one, and were a little worse than a three to one dog (give or take) to hit a card that helps, so he was testing you to see if you would break your hand. He thinks, "I have a badugi. Let's see what he's got." The pat, bet sequence looks like a dare. "I dare you to raise me on the end." The river bet is a last gasp shot at trying to play you off your hand. Pre-emptive bluff calling.
Where is band where a badugi hand goes from good to rough? How does it relate to the same band in TD? The draw games make my head spin
I'm sure people playing badugi are more likely to be triple draw players than hi-lo players. They may be even more likely than that to be bored Doyle's Room hold em players trying something new. Yum yum.
The hand strengths in badugi are not the same as in triple draw. An 8 or better is very good and a jack or worse is rough. Of course non-badugi hands win all the time so you're pretty happy if you make a jack or queen on the last draw.
I think I'll be joining you in Party limit hold 'em. There ain't no sure thing in poker. But Party limit HE is the closest thing to a sure thing.
Thanks for the strategy discussions we had this year, it was a big help to me.
chris, what limit at party is this? 30? above 30, i think the pay is pretty solid actually
Badugi ROCKS! I PREFER holdem, but have been playing badugi and Omaha/8 lately because the online play is generally not that strong. What limit badugi are you playing? I've found that the lower limit Half Pot Limit games at Doyle's are pretty good sometimes.
