Hands Hands Hands

I just played this crazy hand of triple draw and I thought I would share it with you all. I was playing three-handed 30/60 against a Blair Rodman and a maniacal, terrible player. Here's how it went down:

- Maniac raises on the button, Blair folds, I call in SB with 72xxx. With the range of hands this guy has been raising with, this is an easy call. I take 3, he takes two, I check call with 752xx. I take two, he stands pat, I check-call with 7532. So far this hand has been pretty normal, but here's where it gets crazy. I draw another 7 and decide to lead out and bluff with a pair of sevens. He calls me....with T8663. Whaaaaaa? Good read buddy! Wow, well played! He used reads like that one to go broke in a pretty short time.

And now some interesting hold 'em hands from this week's play:

- One limper, I raise in MP with black AA, only limper calls. Flop T62 all diamonds, he checks, I bet, he calls. Turn Ah, he checks, I bet, he calls. River Qc, he checks, I bet, he calls and shows KhJs. I mean if you're going to call the turn, isn't a little more aggression than that in order on the river? My stars.

- One limper, I raise with KQ on the button, SB calls, shortstacked aggressive player three-bets in BB, now the limper caps it (why does the limper always cap it?), all call. Flop AT4 rainbow, SB checks, BB leads out, all call. Turn J, SB checks, BB bets, limper folds (good job capping it buddy), I notice BB only has two big bets left so I just call, SB calls. River T, SB checks, BB checks, I bet, SB calls, now BB raises all-in. I know 100% for sure that I have the SB beat here, but the BB could obviously be full. Do you think calling or raising makes more money in the long run here? I decide to raise and get called. BB shows T8s, SB shows A5o. Good work fellas.

- I open raise with KQo in MP, only crazy loose maniac calls. Flop JhTs3s, I bet, maniac calls. Turn h5, I bet, maniac raises, I call. River 4d, I check preparing to fold, maniac checks and shows Qh7h. People, if you're gonna raise the turn like this and you end up with queen high on the end, you better follow through and bet it.

- Same maniac from the last hand limps UTG, SB raises, I call in BB with K8s, limper calls. Flop K94, SB bets, I raise, limper folds, SB calls. Turn 2 and he check-calls. River 6 and suddenly he leads out. I decide to pay three bets if he has 66 and raise, he calls and shows AJ. People have come up with the strangest strategies. If you're trying to snap off a bluff, just check-call!

- I post both blinds behind the button, UTG+1 raises, I call with JdTd, button calls, SB folds, BB calls. Flop Kd87, BB checks, raiser bets, I call, button raises, BB calls two cold, raiser calls, I call. Turn 9d (aka "gin"), BB checks, raiser checks, I bet (in hindsight I really like a check-raise here...not sure what I was thinking), all call. River 5s, BB checks, now raiser bets out, I raise, button folds, BB calls two cold, raiser three-bets, I cap, both call. Raiser shows 55 for a rivered set (and a lot of bets called to get there), BB shows the more reasonable K6s, making the donkey straight on the river. Nice river there, PartyPoker.

- Two limpers, I raise in SB with AA, BB folds, limpers call. Flop 973, I bet, first guy folds, second guy raises, I three-bet, he caps, I call. Turn A, I bet, he calls. River 5, I bet, he calls with...T8! That's right folks, ten high. It's been a long time since I got called with ten high on the river. God bless PartyPoker and these absolute donkeys.

What happens in the KQ hand vs the maniac if he just calls on the turn. Are you betting the river, check/calling or check/folding?

Peter,

Likely betting and folding to a raise. Maybe check-folding.

That ten high river call is funny as hell. I emailed a hand history to Iggy a while back where a guy actually three bet the river then called a cap w/ 9 high. I love Party Poker.

I can't believe I had to learn poker in live casinos--mostly the Borgata in Atlantic City, which I've since discovered has the toughest poker games--even at lower limits--in all of AC.

I never imagined online was so much softer... Good God, No more $10-$20 at the Taj for me. Must. Fix. Home computer.

Chris,

How many people were in the hold'em hands? 6-handed or 10-handed? Just curious.

Anonymous, I don't post on 2+2.

Do people like calling with T high on the river in a 30-60 game?

That's a scary thought if I ever play that high.

For some reasons, comments aren't being allowed about the tripledraw post above. Interestingly, the hand is amusing both for the donk's call on the end and for the other guy's choice to stand pat after donk draws one with two draws to go. The hero could have drawn 2 to a wheel in position right? against a guy who you both knew was likely to call with a range of hands now that he's drawing just one with 2 draws to go (little did you all know how Wide a range he'd call with!). Where's the value in running the bluff on this sort of player?

I fixed the above post so you can comment on it now. I agree that running a bluff against a player like that isn't the best idea. If you know he will call you with pairs at the end, it's suicidal. At the same time, mixing up your play and standing pat and betting with a hand that can't win if called when you've seen a lot of the 7s and 2s is a strong play against a typical opponent.
